Where the Buddha Turned the Wheel of Dharma

Sarnath & Varanasi Tour Package – The First Sermon of the Buddha

Sarnath, just 10 kilometres from Varanasi, is one of the four most sacred sites in the entire Buddhist world. It is here at the Deer Park (Mrigadava) that the newly enlightened Lord Buddha walked from Bodh Gaya and delivered His very first sermon — the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, the Turning of the Wheel of Dharma — to His first five disciples. Buddhism as a living religion began at this very spot.

For Thai Buddhist pilgrims, Sarnath holds profound spiritual significance. It is the birthplace of the Sangha — the community of monks — and the place where the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha came together for the first time, creating the Triple Gem that is at the heart of all Buddhist practice. Every Thai Buddhist recites the Three Refuges (Tilasarana) daily — and those refuges were first established here, in this peaceful Deer Park in Uttar Pradesh.

Varanasi — the ancient city on the banks of the River Ganga — is the spiritual capital of India. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Varanasi is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains alike. For Buddhist pilgrims, it is the gateway to Sarnath, and its famous Ganga Aarti (evening fire prayer on the riverbank) is a deeply moving spiritual experience.

Why Sarnath? The Birthplace of the Sangha

After attaining Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha did not remain alone. He walked approximately 250 kilometres northward to find His first five disciples — the five ascetics who had previously practised austerity with Him before the Middle Way — knowing they were at the Deer Park in Sarnath.

On the full moon night of Asalha (the fourth lunar month), the Buddha delivered the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta — the First Sermon — explaining the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. As He spoke, one of the five disciples, Kondanna, immediately attained the first level of awakening and exclaimed: ‘Kondanna knows!’ (Annasi Kondanno!). The Buddha declared: ‘The Wheel of Dharma has been set in motion.’ This moment — Dharma Day — is celebrated across the entire Buddhist world, especially in Thailand, as Asalha Puja.

The Buddha taught at Sarnath for the entire first rainy season, and the Sangha grew to 60 fully enlightened monks before they scattered to spread the Dharma. Every Thai monk ordained today traces his lineage back to this very place, to that first evening in the Deer Park.

What You Will Visit in Sarnath & Varanasi

Sarnath — The Deer Park (Mrigadava)

  • Dhamekh Stupa — the magnificent 6th-century CE cylindrical stupa marking the exact spot of the First Sermon; 28 metres in diameter and 43 metres tall, elaborately carved with floral and geometric patterns
  • Dharmarajika Stupa (ruins) — one of the oldest Buddhist stupas, originally built by Emperor Ashoka to enshrine relics of the Buddha
  • Mulagandha Kuti Vihara (New Temple) — the beautiful modern temple built by the Mahabodhi Society, containing original frescoes painted by the Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu; houses a sacred relic of the Buddha
  • Deer Park (Mrigadava) — the actual Deer Park where the First Sermon was delivered; Sarnath deer still roam freely here, creating a living connection to the ancient story
  • Ashoka Pillar (remnant) — the polished sandstone pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka; the famous Lion Capital from this pillar is now India’s national emblem, displayed in the Sarnath Museum
  • Chaukhandi Stupa — the ancient octagonal tower marking the spot where the Buddha first reunited with His five disciples upon arriving at Sarnath

Sarnath Archaeological Museum

  • Home to the original Lion Capital of Ashoka — one of the most important sculptures in India and the national emblem of the Republic of India
  • Dharmachakra (Wheel of Law) from the Ashoka Pillar — the inspiration for the wheel at the centre of India’s national flag
  • Bodhisattva statue from the Gupta period (5th century CE) — considered one of the finest examples of Buddhist art in the world
  • Outstanding collection of Buddhist sculptures, steles, and relics from excavations at Sarnath

Varanasi — The Ancient Spiritual City

  • Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — the spectacular evening fire ceremony on the banks of the Ganga, performed by priests in a choreographed ritual of bells, lamps, and chanting; one of the most moving spiritual experiences in India
  • Sunrise Boat Ride on the River Ganga — glide through the early morning mist on the Ganga, watching the ancient ghats and temples of Varanasi wake up; a profoundly meditative experience
  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple area — the ancient Shiva temple complex, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, in the heart of Varanasi’s old city; important for understanding India’s living spiritual traditions
  • Sarnath to Varanasi city walk / drive — experience the contrast between the serene Buddhist Deer Park and the ancient Hindu city, both coexisting peacefully in the same small area
  • Ramnagar Fort — the ancestral home of the Maharaja of Varanasi, across the Ganga, with a museum of vintage cars, arms and armoury

Optional Day Trip — Allahabad (Prayagraj)

  • Kaushambi — an ancient Buddhist site near Prayagraj, where the Buddha preached during rainy seasons; ruins of an ancient fortified city with an Ashoka Pillar
  • Prayagraj — the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers (Triveni Sangam); important for understanding India’s sacred geography
