Day 1: Arrival in the Land of the Thunderbolt — Gateway to Sikkim

The Eastern Himalayan adventure starts with a flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal. This is the way to get to the Himalayan states of Sikkim and Darjeeling. The drive from Bagdogra to Gangtok, the charming capital of Sikkim, is steep and goes through terraced tea gardens and dense cloud forests. Gangtok is a small hill-station city at 1,650 meters with great views of the Kanchenjunga range. Sikkim is India’s smallest state. It used to be a Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas, and its culture is very much based on Tibetan traditions. It is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.

  • At Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), the Prime Value Tours coordinator meets all 10 guests. They help with check-in, luggage, and reminders to wear warm clothes.
  • Flight: Bangkok (BKK) to Bagdogra (IXB) on IndiGo, Air India, or SpiceJet (about 3–4 hours with a stop in Kolkata or directly; a stop in Kolkata is recommended).
  • When you arrive at Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, a local guide will meet you and give you a mountain-capable vehicle.
  • Drive from Bagdogra to Gangtok (118 km, about 4 hours). The road goes up along the Teesta River through Sub-Himalayan forests and then up from the plains (150m) to Gangtok (1,650m) with sharp turns.
  • Banjhakri Falls is a beautiful tiered waterfall in a forest park where you can stop for refreshments and take pictures.
  • Check-in at Hotel Elgin Nor-Khill (Heritage), Mayfair Spa Resort, or Denzong Regency (4-Star) when you get to Gangtok.
  • MG Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg) is a pedestrian-only promenade with Tibetan crafts, thangka paintings, prayer wheels, and singing bowls. There are also fusion restaurants and a lively evening atmosphere.
  • Do-Drul Chorten Stupa is an important stupa with 108 prayer wheels. Its golden spire can be seen from all over Gangtok. ceremony
  • Gangtok Ropeway (optional): a three-station cable car that gives you aerial views of the city and mountains (weather permitting).
  • Dinner at the hotel: Sikkimese food like thukpa (noodle soup), phagshapa (pork and radish stew), gundruk soup, momo dumplings, and Chang (millet beer).

Meals: Dinner | Accommodation: Hotel Elgin Nor-Khill / Mayfair Spa Resort / Denzong Regency, Gangtok (4-Star)

The most dramatic day of the tour, going up from Gangtok through more and more beautiful high-altitude terrain to Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake), which is 3,753 meters above sea level and one of Sikkim’s most sacred glacial lakes. Then on to Nathula Pass (4,310m), the old Silk Road trading post on the border between India and China. It is one of only three open border crossings between the two countries, and Indian and Chinese soldiers stand face to face across the divide. The beautiful Baba Mandir military shrine on the way back to Gangtok makes for an amazing day.

  • Health check, breakfast at 7:00 AM, and leaving
  • For Tsomgo and Nathula, you need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) that you set up ahead of time. You don’t have to wait in line.
  • The drive from Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake (38 km, about 1.5 hours) is a steep climb through rhododendron forests, army camps, and alpine terrain. You can see yak herders in late spring.
  • 3,753m Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake):
    • Hindus and Buddhists consider this oval glacial lake to be holy.
    • The color of the water changes with the seasons: it is frozen in the winter, turquoise in the summer, and copper-gold in the fall.
    • Optional yak rides (INR 200–300)
    • Tsomgo Temple by the lake
    • Amazing views of mountains and glaciers
  • Nathula Pass: 4,310 meters (India-China border)
    • Old Silk Road trade route
    • Officially marking the India-China border
    • The Indian and Chinese army posts are across from each other. There is a weekly market.
    • Prayer flags all over the place and a stunning view of the mountains
