THE TWO UNESCO MASTERPIECES

AJANTA CAVES

2nd Century BCE – 6th Century CE

Buddhist Rock-Cut Monastery Complex

29 rock-cut cave monuments carved into a dramatic horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora River — the world’s finest surviving examples of ancient Buddhist art. The fresco paintings (Jataka stories, Bodhisattva figures, court scenes) are extraordinarily vivid after 2,000 years. The sculptural work in the Vihara (monastery) and Chaitya (prayer hall) caves is reathtaking. UNESCO inscription: 1983.

Must-See Caves: Cave 1 (Bodhisattva Padmapani), Cave 2 (ceiling frescoes), Cave 10 (oldest chaitya), Cave 16 (Dying Princess), Cave 17 (best paintings), Cave 19 (elaborate facade), Cave 26 (reclining Buddha)

ELLORA CAVES

6th – 11th Century CE

Buddhist, Hindu & Jain Heritage Complex

34 rock-cut cave temples representing the three great religions of India — Buddhist (Caves 1–12), Hindu (Caves 13–29) and Jain (Caves 30–34) — carved over 500 years by multiple dynasties. The centrepiece is the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) — the world’s largest monolithic rock excavation, carved top-down from a single basalt cliff. A staggering achievement of human ingenuity. UNESCO inscription: 1983.

Must-See Caves: Cave 10 (Vishvakarma), Cave 12 (Teen Tal, 3-storey), Cave 16 (Kailasa Temple — the unmissable centrepiece), Cave 21 Rameshvara — finest Hindu sculpture), Cave 29 (Dumar Lena), Cave 32 (Indra Sabha — Jain masterpiece)

3-DAY DETAILED ITINERARY

All transfers by private air-conditioned vehicle. Expert art-history and heritage guide throughout.

Day 1: Departure — Gateway to the Deccan's Ancient Wonders

Your Heritage Tour begins at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, where the group boards the flight to Aurangabad — the heritage capital of Maharashtra and the base for exploring both Ajanta and Ellora. Known as the ‘City of Gates’, Aurangabad was the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s capital and is home to remarkable monuments of its own. The afternoon is spent exploring the city’s own heritage treasures before settling in for the two-night cave exploration ahead.

  • Group assembly at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) — Prime Value Tours coordinator meets all 10 guests; group check-in, baggage assistance, pre-departure briefing on the tour
  • Flight: Bangkok (BKK) to Aurangabad (IXU) — via Mumbai (BOM) or direct charter (approx. 5–7 hrs total via IndiGo / Air India / SpiceJet); coordinator assists with check-in at both airports
  • Arrival at Chikkalthana Airport (IXU), Aurangabad — welcome by local expert guide and driver
  • Private AC vehicle transfer to hotel — check-in: Lemon Tree Hotel Aurangabad / WelcomHotel Rama International / Vivanta Aurangabad or similar (4-Star)
  • Freshen up, welcome tea and tour briefing by the expert guide — introduction to the art-history, geology and significance of both cave sites
  • Bibi Ka Maqbara (approx. 3 km from hotel) — the remarkable 1660 CE Mughal mausoleum built by Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother; often called the ‘Taj of the Deccan’ for its unmistakable resemblance to the Taj Mahal; beautifully lit at dusk
  • Aurangabad Caves — a little-visited treasure: 12 Buddhist rock-cut caves (7th century CE) on a hilltop north of the city; superb sculptures of Tantric Buddhist goddesses; panoramic views of the Deccan plateau
  • Panchakki (Water Mill) — the 17th-century watermill and dargah complex built around an underground water channel; ornamental gardens, fish pond and the shrine of the Sufi saint Shah Musafir
  • Daulatabad Fort exterior view (if time permits) — the 12th-century hill fortress considered one of the strongest in medieval India
  • Silk Weaving Quarter, Aurangabad — the city’s famous Himroo and Paithani silk weaving workshops; opportunity to watch master weavers at work on traditional pit looms and browse authentic fabrics
  • Welcome dinner at hotel or recommended Aurangabad restaurant — Maharashtrian cuisine introduction: naan khaliya, tahiri, sheer khurma; guide’s full presentation on both cave sites for tomorrow and Day 3

Meals: Dinner | Accommodation: Lemon Tree Aurangabad / WelcomHotel Rama International (4-Star)

An early start for the most extraordinary art gallery in the ancient world. The 29 Ajanta Caves — cut into a dramatic U-shaped gorge above the Waghora River in the 2nd century BCE — contain some of the world’s most extraordinary artistic achievements: vividly coloured fresco paintings depicting the Jataka tales of the Buddha’s previous lives, scenes of court life, nature and devotion, executed with a mastery of perspective and storytelling that rivals the Renaissance. Your expert art-history guide brings each cave alive with context, symbolism and narrative.

  • Early start — hotel breakfast (7:00 AM) to maximise time at Ajanta
  • Drive to Ajanta Caves (99 km, approx. 2–2.5 hrs via NH-52) — private AC vehicle; guide narrates the history of the Satavahana and Vakataka dynasties who commissioned the cave
  • Arrival Ajanta — state-run eco-friendly minibus from car park to cave entrance; purchase of group entry tickets by Prime Value Tours coordinator
    1. CAVE 1 (Vakataka period, 5th c. CE): The most celebrated cave — magnificent Bodhisattva Padmapani and Vajrapani murals; the supreme masterpiece of Ajanta painting; the ceiling covered in interlocking ornamental designs
    2. CAVE 2: Breathtaking painted ceiling — concentric circle and floral patterns; Jataka story frescoes in extraordinary condition; the nativity of the Buddha scene
    3. CAVE 9 & 10: The two oldest chaitya grihas (prayer halls) at Ajanta — ancient ribbed roofs carved to simulate timber; ghost paintings from the earliest Hinayana period beneath later frescoes
    4. CAVE 16: The ‘Dying Princess’ (Sundari) — arguably the most emotionally powerful painting in all of Ajanta; her grief at parting from Prince Nanda is depicted with extraordinary psychological depth
    5. CAVE 17: Often considered Ajanta’s finest — the Flying Apsaras ceiling, the Simhala Avadana (ship painting), the Visvantara Jataka panorama; colours remarkably vivid
    6. CAVE 19: A Vakataka chaitya with an intricate carved facade; the standing Naga king (five-headed serpent) flanking the entrance is one of Ajanta’s most photographed sculptures
    7. CAVE 26: The magnificent 7-metre reclining Buddha (Parinirvana); elaborate carvings of Mara’s temptation; celestial beings mourning the passing of the Enlightened One
  • Viewpoint from the cliff opposite — the full panorama of all 29 caves in their horseshoe gorge setting; photography opportunity
  • Packed lunch (arranged by Prime Value Tours) OR lunch at Ajanta MTDC cafeteria — refreshing break between cave sections
  • Remaining cave highlights: Caves 4 (largest vihara), 6, 11, 12 — additional sculptural and fresco treasures
  • Drive back to Aurangabad (approx. 2–2.5 hrs) — relaxed return with scenic Deccan plateau views
  • Hotel check-in and rest period (approx. 6–7 PM)
  • Dinner at hotel — debriefing on the Ajanta paintings; guide distributes illustrated art-history notes on key works; preview of tomorrow’s Ellora Caves programme

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Accommodation: Lemon Tree Aurangabad / WelcomHotel Rama International (4-Star)

The third and final day is dedicated to the Ellora Caves — perhaps the most astonishing archaeological site in all of India. Unlike Ajanta’s painted Buddhist caves, Ellora presents a panoramic sweep of 34 rock-cut monuments representing Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism side by side, carved over five centuries. The day’s centrepiece is the overwhelming Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) — the world’s largest single-rock structure, carved downwards from a cliff face to create a freestanding temple, dwarfing everything around it. The group departs Aurangabad in the evening for the return flight to Bangkok.

  • Hotel breakfast and partial check-out (bags held by hotel; departure to airport after Ellora visit)
  • Drive to Ellora Caves (30 km, approx. 45 mins) — private AC vehicle; guide narrates the context of the three religious traditions represented at Ellora
  • ELLORA CAVES — FULL EXPERT-GUIDED TOUR (approx. 4.5–5 hrs):
    1. BUDDHIST CAVES (1–12): Two-and-three storeyed monastery complexes of the Kalachuri and early Chalukya periods; Cave 10 (Vishvakarma / Carpenter’s Cave) — the finest Buddhist chaitya at Ellora, with a magnificent Buddha in dhamma chakra mudra flanked by Bodhisattvas; the ribbed rock ceiling imitating wooden vaulting; Cave 12 (Teen Tal) — a remarkable three-storey monastery with rows of massive Buddha figures and Tantric deities
    2. CAVE 16 — KAILASA TEMPLE (Rashtrakuta King Krishna I, 8th c. CE): THE centrepiece of Ellora and one of the greatest human achievements in architecture — a complete Shaivite temple complex carved from top to bottom out of a single basalt cliff, with two-storey entrance gateway, a free-standing Nandi pavilion, the main shikhara tower (rising 32 metres), life-sized elephant and lion sculptures flanking the courtyard, and intricate panels depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Shiva Purana; 200,000 tonnes of rock removed over an estimated 150 years
    3. CAVE 21 (Rameshvara): Early Chalukyan temple with the finest Hindu sculpture at Ellora — the celestial river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna flanking the entrance, the dancing Shiva (Nataraja) panel and the magnificent Lakulisha figure
    4. CAVE 29 (Dumar Lena): Large cruciform-plan Shiva cave; the impressive Shiva and Parvati marriage scene; dramatic Andhakasuravadha (Shiva destroying the demon) panel
    5. JAIN CAVES (30–34): Cave 32 (Indra Sabha) — the finest Jain cave: two-storey structure with a freestanding monolithic column; remarkable ceiling of a giant lotus flower; elegantly carved Yakshi (attendant goddess) figures; Cave 34 — delicate Jain carving at its most refined
  • Group photograph at Kailasa Temple — the signature image of the tour
  • Lunch at recommended Ellora area restaurant or hotel packed lunch (fresh Maharashtrian thali — a fitting final meal)
  • Return drive to Aurangabad (30 km, 45 mins)
  • Hotel: collect luggage, final freshen-up, check-out
  • Optional: Last-minute shopping in Aurangabad — Himroo fabric shawls, Paithani silk sarees, Ajanta replica art prints, bidri metalwork (traditional silver-on-black Deccan craft)

Essential Visitor Tips — Ajanta & Ellora

Dress Code Comfortable, modest clothing recommended, with covered shoulders and knees. Flat non-slip shoes are essential due to uneven and slippery cave floors. A small torch or phone light is useful inside dimly lit painted caves.
India Visa Apply for Indian e-Tourist Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4–5 days before travel. Cost ranges from USD 25–80 depending on nationality. A single-entry visa is sufficient, and the passport must be valid for 6 months beyond travel.
Photography Permitted outside caves. Flash photography is strictly prohibited inside painted caves at Ajanta to prevent damage to ancient pigments. Camera permit fees (INR 25–200) may apply inside some caves. Professional equipment may require separate permission.
Health Cave walks involve moderate uphill paths. Comfortable walking shoes, bottled water, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended. Basic medicines are available at Aurangabad pharmacies. Emergency medical facilities are located in Aurangabad city.
Currency Indian Rupee (INR). Thai Baht can be exchanged at Aurangabad Airport or hotels. ATMs are widely available in Aurangabad city. Carry INR 500–1000 cash per person for entrance fees, tips, and purchases. Credit cards are accepted at 4-Star hotels and major shops.
Shopping Aurangabad is known for Himroo shawls and sarees (gold-thread brocade), Paithani silk (peacock-tail weave), Bidriwork (silver-inlay metalcraft from the Deccan), and Ajanta replica art prints. Himroo cooperative workshops near hotels offer authentic products.
