Why Bodh Gaya?

The Most Sacred Place in Buddhism

The story of Bodh Gaya is the story of Buddhism itself. After years of wandering, studying with teachers, and practicing extreme asceticism, Siddhartha Gautama sat beneath a Ficus religiosa tree — the Bodhi Tree — on the banks of the Niranjana River and resolved not to rise until he had found the truth that would end suffering for all beings.

Through the night he faced the attacks of Mara (the demon of illusion), and at dawn he achieved complete Enlightenment — understanding the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the nature of reality. He became the Buddha: the Fully Awakened One.

The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built at this exact location, stands 55 metres tall and is one of the oldest brick structures in the Indian subcontinent. The descendant of the original Bodhi Tree still grows here, cared for and revered by Buddhists from around the world. The Thai government has a permanent monastery here, and thousands of Thai pilgrims visit every year — making Bodh Gaya one of the most Thai-connected sacred sites in India.

Important Travel Information for Thai Pilgrims

How to Reach Bodh GayaBest Time to Visit Bodh GayaDress Code & Temple Etiquette
Nearest airport: Gaya International Airport (GAY) — receives direct flights from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) during peak pilgrimage season (November–February). Alternatively, fly into Varanasi (VNS) and drive to Bodh Gaya (approx. 5 hours, 250 km). Our team provides pickup at both airports. October to February is ideal — pleasant temperatures (12–25°C), the Bodhi Tree in full leaf, and the international Buddhist community at its most vibrant. The Bodh Gaya Festival (Baisakh Purnima / Buddha Purnima) in May is spiritually powerful but very hot. Avoid June–September (monsoon). Thai groups most commonly travel in November, December, and January. The Mahabodhi Temple Complex requires modest dress (shoulders and knees covered; sarongs available at the entrance). Shoes must be removed before entering the temple. Mobile phones should be silenced. Photography is permitted in the garden areas but restricted inside the main temple. Our guide will brief your group on all protocols before entry.
