The story of Bodh Gaya is the story of Buddhism itself. After years of wandering, studying with teachers, and practicing extreme asceticism, Siddhartha Gautama sat beneath a Ficus religiosa tree — the Bodhi Tree — on the banks of the Niranjana River and resolved not to rise until he had found the truth that would end suffering for all beings.
Through the night he faced the attacks of Mara (the demon of illusion), and at dawn he achieved complete Enlightenment — understanding the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the nature of reality. He became the Buddha: the Fully Awakened One.
The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built at this exact location, stands 55 metres tall and is one of the oldest brick structures in the Indian subcontinent. The descendant of the original Bodhi Tree still grows here, cared for and revered by Buddhists from around the world.
