Welcome to Srinagar — the ‘City of Lakes’, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir and one of the most beautiful cities in all of Asia. Nestled in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, encircled by the magnificent Himalayan and Pir Panjal ranges, Srinagar has enchanted Mughal emperors, European explorers and travellers for centuries. Your first night is spent aboard a traditional Kashmiri houseboat on the legendary Dal Lake — one of the world’s most unique accommodation experiences.
Meals: Dinner | Accommodation: Traditional Houseboat, Dal Lake, Srinagar
Sonamarg — meaning ‘Meadow of Gold’ — is the last major valley before the Ladakh territory begins, situated at 2,743 metres in a dramatic landscape of snow-capped peaks, glaciers and alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers. The drive from Srinagar follows the Sindh River through a succession of increasingly spectacular Himalayan scenery. Sonamarg is also the gateway to the Thajiwas Glacier — where permanent snow can be touched even in July and August.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Accommodation: Lemon Tree Aurangabad / WelcomHotel Rama International (4-Star)
Gulmarg — ‘Meadow of Flowers’ — is one of Kashmir’s most celebrated destinations: a high-altitude bowl at 2,650 metres, carpeted in emerald green in summer and buried in 4-metre snowdrifts in winter, making it India’s premier ski destination. Home to the Gulmarg Gondola — Asia’s highest and longest cable car, reaching Affarwat Peak at 4,200 metres — and the world’s highest golf course, Gulmarg has been a royal playground since the reign of Emperor Jahangir.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Accommodation: Hotel Highlands Park / Pine Palace Resort, Gulmarg
Pahalgam — the ‘Valley of Shepherds’ — is Kashmir’s most picturesque resort: a verdant valley carved by the crystal-clear Lidder River, flanked by pine-forested mountains and wide open meadows where Bakarwal nomads graze their flocks beneath snow peaks. Pahalgam is also the famous starting point of the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. The drive from Gulmarg passes through the famous saffron fields of Pampore — Kashmir’s ‘Saffron Capital’ — and the remarkable ruins of Avantipura.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Accommodation: Meerz Ramada / Sarovar Portico Namrose / Apple Orchard Resort, Srinagar
The final morning in Srinagar — with perhaps one last look at the Dal Lake in the early morning light, the mountains reflected in its still surface, the shikara boats gliding silently across the water and the mist rising from the Zabarwan Hills. Kashmir always leaves its guests with the same quiet certainty: they will return. The valley has a way of claiming a piece of every heart that visits.
