Odisha Buddhist Diamond Triangle Tour – Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Bhubaneswar – the Temple City
Our representative welcomes you at Bhubaneswar airport or railway station. After check-in, begin with the places linked to Emperor Ashoka.
Bhubaneswar is the capital of Odisha and is called the Temple City of India, because hundreds of old stone temples stand in and around the city. But for Buddhist pilgrims, the most important place here is Dhauli. Around 261 BCE, Emperor Ashoka fought the terrible Kalinga War on the plains below this hill. So many people died that the emperor felt deep sorrow. He gave up war and turned to the teaching of the Buddha.
His rock edicts, cut into the stone at Dhauli, still speak of kindness to all people. On the hilltop stands the white Shanti Stupa, the Peace Pagoda, built in 1972 with help from Japanese Buddhists. It is a calm place for your first prayer of the journey. In the evening, rest at your hotel.
- Dhauli Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda) on the hill above the old Kalinga battlefield
- Ashoka rock edicts at Dhauli
- Lingaraj Temple (non-Hindu guests see it from the viewing platform outside)
Overnight: Bhubaneswar
Day 2: Konark Sun Temple and Puri
Drive to Konark (about 65 km). Visit the 13th-century Sun Temple, built as a giant stone chariot with 24 carved wheels. Continue to Puri (about 35 km). Visit the area around the Jagannath Temple. Please note: only Hindus may enter this temple, so foreign guests see it from outside. Evening walk on Puri beach.
The Konark Sun Temple was built around 1250 CE by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The whole temple is shaped like the chariot of the Sun God, with 24 large carved stone wheels pulled by seven horses. Some wheels work as sundials, and your guide will show how to read the time from their shadows. The walls are covered with fine carvings of dancers, musicians, animals and daily life.
In the afternoon, reach Puri, one of the four most holy towns for Hindus. The streets near the Jagannath Temple are full of pilgrims, flower sellers and sweet shops. In the evening, relax on the wide sandy beach of the Bay of Bengal and enjoy the sea breeze.
Overnight: Puri
Day 3: Puri to Bhubaneswar – Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves
After a relaxed morning by the sea, drive from Puri to Bhubaneswar (about 60 km). In the afternoon, visit the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, cut into the hills more than 2,000 years ago. Evening free for local handicraft shopping.
The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves stand on two small hills on the edge of the city. These rock-cut caves were made in the 1st and 2nd centuries BCE, mostly as homes for Jain monks, during the rule of King Kharavela. The Hathigumpha inscription here is one of the most important old records of Kalinga. In the evening, shop for Odisha handicrafts such as Pattachitra paintings, silver filigree from Cuttack and handwoven Sambalpuri cloth.
Overnight: Bhubaneswar
Day 4: Day Trip to Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri – the Buddhist Diamond Triangle
Early start from Bhubaneswar for a full-day trip to the Jajpur area (about 100 km each way). Spend a peaceful day at the three great Buddhist sites, with time for chanting and meditation at each site. Return to your Bhubaneswar hotel in the evening.
This is the heart of your Odisha tour package. Lalitgiri is one of the oldest Buddhist sites in the state. Here, archaeologists found a stupa with stone and silver caskets holding sacred relics. You can see a large monastery, a prayer hall and a museum with beautiful Buddha images. Ratnagiri, meaning “hill of jewels”, was a great Mahavihara from about the 5th to the 13th century, and an important centre of Vajrayana Buddhism.
The large seated Buddha in its main shrine is very peaceful. The site museum holds many fine stone heads of the Buddha and of Bodhisattvas. Udayagiri is the largest Buddhist complex in Odisha, with a brick stupa, two monasteries and an old stepped well. There is time to chant, offer flowers and meditate quietly at each site.
- Lalitgiri – one of the oldest Buddhist sites in Odisha. A stone casket with sacred relics was found inside its stupa.
- Ratnagiri – a large Mahavihara (monastery) and a museum full of beautiful Buddha and Bodhisattva images
- Udayagiri – the largest Buddhist complex in Odisha, with a stupa and a seated Buddha

Odisha and the Story of Emperor Ashoka
In ancient times, Odisha was known as Kalinga, a rich land of sea traders. Its ships sailed to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia. Some historians believe that Buddhist teachings and Indian art reached Southeast Asia partly through these sea routes from Kalinga. For Thai pilgrims, this makes Odisha a very special place to visit.
The Kalinga War changed the history of Asia. After the battle, Emperor Ashoka became a follower of the Buddha. He built stupas, cut edicts into rocks and pillars, and sent monks to many lands to share the Dhamma, including his own son Mahinda to Sri Lanka. Dhauli, near Bhubaneswar, is where this change of heart is remembered.
Later, from the 5th to the 13th century, Odisha became a great centre of Buddhist learning. Monasteries at Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri and Udayagiri were full of monks and students. The famous Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang visited this region in the 7th century and wrote about its many monasteries. Today these sites are quiet and green, cared for by the Archaeological Survey of India. On our Odisha tour package, you see them with a guide who explains their history with respect.
How to Reach Bhubaneswar
Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar has flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and other Indian cities. From Bangkok, you can fly via Kolkata or Delhi. Bhubaneswar is also linked by fast trains to Kolkata, Varanasi and Delhi.
If you are already on our Buddhist Circuit tour, we can plan a flight or train from Gaya, Patna or Varanasi to Bhubaneswar, so you can add this Odisha tour package at the end of your pilgrimage.
Pilgrim Tips for the Buddhist Sites of Odisha
The Buddhist sites of Odisha are open, green and peaceful. To make your visit meaningful, we suggest bringing flowers, candles or incense from Bhubaneswar, as there are few shops near Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri. Our guide can arrange fresh flowers in the morning before you leave Bhubaneswar.
Please speak softly at the sites, do not climb on the stupas or old walls, and do not touch the carvings. These monuments are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and their care helps future pilgrims too.
Group chanting is welcome at the open areas of each site. Many Thai groups chant the Itipiso and the Karaniya Metta Sutta at Ratnagiri, in front of the great seated Buddha. Morning light is soft and cool, so we try to reach the first site early.
The site museums at Lalitgiri and Ratnagiri hold some of the finest Buddhist sculpture in eastern India. Photography rules can change, so please follow the signs or ask the staff. Allow at least one hour for each museum.
Simple lunch is usually taken at a local restaurant or a government tourist lodge near the sites. We can carry packed food, fruit and drinking water for the group, and arrange vegetarian meals for monks before noon.
Mornings in Odisha can be humid even in winter, so light cotton clothes in white or soft colours are best. Carry a small towel, an umbrella for sun or rain, and a light shawl for the air-conditioned vehicle. Good walking sandals that slip off easily are useful, because you will remove footwear often at stupa platforms.
For larger groups, we can arrange a local Buddhist monk or a heritage expert to give a short talk at Ratnagiri about the history of Vajrayana Buddhism in Odisha. Please tell us in advance so we can plan it with care.
Most of all, take your time. The quiet of these old monasteries, the sound of birds and the gentle morning light make the Diamond Triangle one of the most peaceful places for prayer in all of India.
