The Shore Temple stands right beside the sea and is one of the oldest stone temples in South India. The Five Rathas are temples shaped like chariots, each carved from a single rock.
Arjuna’s Penance is one of the largest rock carvings in the world, with gods, people, elephants and animals around a natural crack in the stone. The whole site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also watch stone carvers at work in the town, keeping this old art alive.

About Tamil Nadu – the Heart of a South India Temple Tour from Chennai
Tamil Nadu has one of the oldest living cultures in the world. The Tamil language has poetry more than 2,000 years old, and many of its temples have held daily worship for centuries. Three great dynasties built the monuments on this tour: the Pallavas of Mahabalipuram, the Cholas of Tanjore and the Pandyas and Nayaks of Madurai.
South India also has a long Buddhist history. Kanchipuram was once an important centre of Buddhist learning. The famous scholar Dharmapala of Nalanda is said to have come from Kanchipuram, and the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang visited the city in the 7th century. For Thai Buddhist guests, this adds a special link to the land of the Tamils.
Tamil food is light and tasty. Try dosa, idli with sambar, Chettinad dishes and the famous banana-leaf meals. South Indian filter coffee is loved by everyone. Most meals are rice-based, which many Thai guests enjoy. We can ask hotels for less spicy food on request.
How to Reach Chennai

At the end of the tour, the flight from Madurai to Chennai takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. If you prefer, you can also fly home from Madurai via another Indian city. We will plan the best connection for you.
Temple Etiquette on Your South India Temple Tour from Chennai
South Indian temples are living places of worship, so please follow a few simple rules. Remove shoes at the entrance and leave them at the shoe counter for a small fee. Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees. In some temples, men may be asked to remove shirts before entering inner areas, and women should avoid sleeveless tops.
Photography is not allowed inside the inner shrines of most temples. In some temples, a camera ticket lets you take photos in outer halls and corridors. Your guide will tell you the rules at each temple.
Many temples close for a few hours in the afternoon, usually from about 12:30 to 4:00 pm. We plan visits in the morning and evening, when the temples are open, the stone floors are cooler and the atmosphere is best, with lamps, bells and music.
You may receive holy ash, kumkum powder or flowers from a priest. It is polite to accept with your right hand. A small donation is welcome but never required. Please do not touch the temple images or step over offerings on the floor.
Following these simple customs shows respect, and local people will welcome you warmly on every South India temple tour from Chennai.
Our local guides will gladly explain the meaning of the rituals, the stories carved on the towers and the differences between the Pallava, Chola and Pandya styles, so every temple visit becomes richer and easier to understand.
