Day 1: Welcome to Paradise — Dal Lake & Mughal Gardens

Welcome to Srinagar — the ‘City of Lakes’, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir and one of the most beautiful cities in all of Asia. Nestled in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, encircled by the magnificent Himalayan and Pir Panjal ranges, Srinagar has enchanted Mughal emperors, European explorers and travellers for centuries. Your first night is spent aboard a traditional Kashmiri houseboat on the legendary Dal Lake — one of the world’s most unique accommodation experiences.

  • Meet and greet at Srinagar Airport — Prime Value Tours representative welcomes all guests with a traditionalKashmiri welcome drink (kehwa or sharbat)
  • Transfer to traditional Houseboat on Dal Lake — the iconic cedar-wood houseboats of Dal Lake, fully furnished with drawing room, dining area and bedrooms; each houseboat has its own private shikara for lakeside access.
  • Check-in and settle into the houseboat accommodation.
  • Afternoon: Mughal Gardens Tour — three of the finest Mughal garden complexes in the world, built by Mughal
    1. — Chashme Shahi (The Royal Spring): Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 CE; famous for its natural spring water; terraced garden with fruit trees, fountains and flower beds; panoramic views of Dal Lake and the city
    2. — Nishat Bagh (Garden of Pleasure): The largest Mughal garden in Kashmir (1633 CE), built by Asaf Khan; twelve terraces representing the twelve signs of the zodiac; spectacular backdrop of the Zabarwan Hills
    3. — Shalimar Bagh (Abode of Love): Built by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved Queen Nur Jahan (1619 CE); four terraces of fountains, watercourses and flowering gardens; the most romantic of the Mughal gardens
  • Evening Shikara Ride on Dal Lake — 60 minutes: glide across the mirror-calm waters of Dal Lake in a beautifully decorated Kashmiri shikara boat; watch the sunset reflect on the water; pass the floating vegetable gardens (radhs), the floating market, and the colourful houseboats at golden hour
  • Return to houseboat; freshen up

The drive from Srinagar follows the Sindh River through a succession of increasingly spectacular Himalayan scenery. Sonamarg is also the gateway to the Thajiwas Glacier — where permanent snow can be touched even in July and August.
